Character study! Walk cycles . . .

Heeey! So what's been happening this summer. Lots really. But tbh I'm so exhausted talking about it all that I shall get right onto topic instead. And so as I listen to 'Captain Beefheart' and wile away a couple of hours I end up one walk cycle heavier than before. This is just a quick basic walk test for the main character of my film pitch. Looking at shapes and deciding on styles in terms of how easy they are to animate. This character went surprisingly well. He has bouncy hair. And a hood. But as long as you pay attention to the ups and downs acting on those two objects I don't think he would pose any problems to an animator. In fact for some of the more intimate scenes. The 'Money shots', I could possibly add a little more into him. That is a test for another day however. Hope you like it so far.

Hey guys! So Figured I'd have a quick bash at this months 11 second club challenge. Would love to know what everyone thinks.
Lots of firsts in this one. First time I have had a proper attempt at animating to a piece of dialogue. First time animating a full acting sequence. First time animating a face with lip synch.
And as with all firsts, there's lots that can be improved on.

Its definitely nowhere near as finished as I would like. And there's an awful lot in there that's not particularly good at the moment. Maybe something I can work back into later. I think the main problem is there is just too much going on. Its not very clear. And in animation, clarity is everything.

I haven't entered it unfortunately. For a couple of reasons. But hey ho. It was a big old learning curve and i look forward to trying another one. Hopefully with a bit more success.

Heeey. So this week I have done a lot of training. The travelling kind that is. Getting from one place to another. Its been a busy old time because of it. Especially on the way back. Apparently thunder and lighting is good enough reason to cancel every train this side of London for a good two hours. But hey ho, what better time to sit and kill a few hours drawing people ambling about. Here's a few of those very sketches . . . (apart from the ones at the top, they're just studies from a newspaper).

And in the mean time here's some more hands. You might recognise the style. I have been reading a lot of Bridgeman lately. Absolute genius of life drawing. These are however my own hands and not artist copies. (For one thing they're not good enough)

Lulworth cove, Hands and Disney!

Hi, so, i haven't posted in quite a while have I. Alas uni is over more or less for the summer. And i hate photographing my work. Much prefer the university scanners. I just cant get the colours right on my own.

But hey ho, ill have to make do for a bit. Here's a quick watercolour I did whilst at Lulworth cove yesterday. Its not very good tbh. But I have not really had a go at observational painting before until I went to Annecy a couple of weeks ago. Since then the idea has captivated me. SO latest effort!!

As for the Hands and Disney part of this post. Here we go. I have to admit since getting back from Annecy i haven't done as many, but it is still there. I think its not something I need to do every day any more. Just something I can practice every couple of days or so. These particular examples are hands done in a very caricature style.

As for the Disney piccy. Its a piece of art done by a guy called Amano something or other. I really loved the line quality of it, very fine. Its also in its original form a watercolour. This is something i want to start playing with soon. The original is here.

Anyhows. I'm currently working on an 11 second club challenge, that for once I think I might actually finish!! Ill post it up as soon as its done so you can see what you think. Annecy Festival!

Wow, so I just got back from Annecy animation festival last week. Already i want to go back. I am that eager I have decided to try and learn French. xD So, if you can speak French, please let me know, I need the help! Merci.

It was amazing. I think my favourite part (apart from all of it) was possibly the Disney talks. Especially the talk with Paul Briggs about story.

(For those of you who don't know, Paul Briggs is a story supervisor at Disney at the moment working as a lead story guy for their next big feature.)

Oh and possibly getting to see the newest Pixar short. Its called La luna. A very cute story about three generations of people that keep the moon shining brightly. I got a poster for it, woop!! Umm, also just relaxing by the lake was pretty nice. It was a stunning location to say the least and I think I could have quite happily have stayed there all day just sketching and relaxing amongst friends.

Anyhow, here's a quickety update regarding some of those aforementioned sketches I did there. Some are okay, others leave a lot to be desired, but hey ho.

Disney & Hands part 5

So this may be my last post for the next week or so. Hey ho, I am not gonna be complaining as I will be off to Annecy in France instead. Really excited about it. Massive massive animation festival . . . and also a chance to maybe chill out for a bit too. Particularly looking forward to having a midnight swim in the lake!

Anyhow, here's my Disney and hands progress. Been doing this for 12 days so far. It feels like a lot longer. But even now, looking back at the first couple of days I feel as though I have learnt a lot. My drawing of hands has become more informed, muscles exist where they didn't in my drawings before. Also more assured. Less as though i was fumbling around and not really knowing what I was doing. Hopefully this should really help with my animating. Just in the range of emotions and gestures that I can hopefully add to my bag of tricks. We will have to see.

Disney & Hands part 4

So been a long weekend this week. Literally. And sigh* was working every single one of them. It could have been worse I guess. My mood was lifted momentarily when a raggedy homeless guy came into the shop and declared at, (rather than too,) the customers that they where 'supposed to be in the music industry'. After which he spat on the floor and stomped out. All because dogs aren't allowed in the shopping centre. (What does being in the music industry have to do with dogs??)

That three days of being in the music industry did not stop me however, from doing my Disney drawings and my Hands!!

This weekend i have focussed a small amount more not on just animation frames but character designs and concept works as well. In particular youll notice a lot of children from Toy Story 3. I have always struggled with designing appealing young characters. In doing these however i have learnt a lot about where i was going wrong. Proportions etc.

Disney and Hands

So, this summer, in brief. I want to get better. Be a better animator and all round artist. And so with that in mind I have started doing these random odd tasks here there and everywhere. Drawing my hands in 6 different positions each night. And copying as exactly as possible a frame of animation from someone I admire as an animator. I guess by copying there work I get an insight into their thought process as they have drawn that frame. For example Andreas Deja has a really strong line of action in his work I have discovered. Frank Thomas however seemed instead to trust to intuition. Either that or he's a genius . . . Probs the latter.

Today is day 3 of this and so far it has been going okay. . . . ish. I think style is something I can work my way up too eventually. For the moment however, I just wanna focus on getting it right technically, and then economy of line.

Condor story

So today, I have been tied down and whipped into submission. Unfortunately (as much as i would love to pitch a numerous amount of films next year) have been told that I have to choose which idea i am going to take forward, today!!

As such I can finally reveal a couple of concepts for one of the stories that I will not be taking further for the time being. The story is about disparity between two peoples. And how a lack of understanding between people can lead to a recognition of difference rather than similarity . . . eventually leading to animosity.

The two main characters are a Sherpa and a Bird of fire. The very last Bird of fire in existence. Set near the Tibetan plateau during the 50's when the second world war had opened up technology to even the most rural places in the world.

These are just a couple of character designs for the Sherpa. Based on research into the tradition of Sherpas that lead tourists around the Himalayas.

This second bunch of images include a couple of character concepts and a vague design for the location of the Sherpas village. The research again being based on the traditional values of Buddhist architecture in Tibet.

I'm sad to have to be saying goodbye to this idea. And many other ideas that haven't even seen the light of day yet. But I am also very pleased to have now, a specific story and short film idea that I can begin to visualize and build over the summer.

Good luck to all the other second years who will undoubtedly be doing the same as me. I cannot wait till pitch week! Its gonna be an exciting time.

Catching up with the last 2 months

So, where to begin. Its been a busy 2 months. I have recently been to China on a work experience placement. Which was . . . AWESOME! Seriously what an amazing country! As for the work I was doing there, I was working for a company called glory and dreams studio. They are currently making an animated feature called 'back to the sea'. Its due to be finished in about a year. My main responsibilities where storyboarding and art designing, which was amazing! It meant I got to work very closely with the director, Thom. We shared a lot of ideas. Who knows you might even see a few of them in the final edit.

In the mean time, here's a small sampling of some observational drawing I did whilst I was out there. Sadly its all very . . . pencilly, as tbh I didn't want to fill my suitcase with magical art materials. But even so I'm quite happy with some of the results.

Ummm what do we have in this next slide. Ahh yes. Earlier this term I was shipped off to the British museum with the rest of my course. They have so much to see and draw there. I was particularly loving the Greek urns. All in all it proved to be a good day out even if the traffic on the way back was horrendous. Though saying that, had there been no traffic I would never have been able to draw Benjy and Carmen as they fell asleep. (Top left)

We also have a couple of pages of just observing people. One of which was from a pretty inspirational lecture by Mike Shorten. A 2d animator and artist who graduated from my course in 2006. I was particularly impressed and hopeful to find that there can still be work out there for 2D animators. And good work at that.

Ahh and a random picture of Hengistbury head. A place of such beauty!! And possibly the best sunsets in the world!

And then finally here we have a random sampling of some recent-ish life drawing. The bottom images, though not my bets drawings ever, where such fun to do. So thanks to storm for dressing up and toting a massive fake gun around for 2 hours!

Anyhows. I shall endeavour to post again soon. Maybe once I have finished a couple of my university units I will post up some of the ideas I have been working on. Character designs and storyboards n such.

Voodoo portrait

Hey. So I have recently discovered CG hub. Its an extremely inspirational site full of extremely talented people. (Lets hope I don't noob it up too much) :-p

I have recently entered a drawing jam challenge of theirs. Voodoo witch or shaman is the title. I have wanted to start looking at human portraiture and so for this challenge I created a young girl. A granddaughter of a voodoo witch who is caught in the act of trying on her grandmas jewellery. I like the picture but also I feel it lacks any sense of texture or maturity. Maybe ill work back into it soon and make it better. But in the mean time it was an interesting learning curve.

I would love to know what people think of it, or if anyone has any advice on how I could improve my painting technique?

First ever Matte painting (WIP)

Day 2

Did a tiny bit this morning. Figured I should update my progress as I go. re adjusted the scale of the picture and added some more intimate details here and there. Still a long way to go yet though.

Day 1

Hi.

Its been a while since I have posted anything. However the Christmas holidays have come and I have finally found, at the back of a cupboard with the tinsel, some time.

Using this time I decided to flick through some old copies of imagine fx, when I stumbled across a Matte artist named Sarel Theron. His work is always epic. To the nth degree. And yet he still manages to retain a painterly touch to his paintings that looks almost new romantic.

Whilst browsing through his website, I found a tutorial.

And well, I just had to have a go.

This is as far as I have got this evening.

I think the biggest thing that surprised me was how much creative freedom you can give yourself with this technique. I don't really know why but beforehand I had always considered matte painting a very clinical and precise method. But so far I have been enjoying this immensely.

I do intend to finish this at a later date by the way. After all it would be a shame to only half complete it. I definitely need to get the scale right soon. The castle is nearly as big as the mountain on the left. Repair job!!

I look forward to posting up some new work this Christmas. Make the most of this found time.

Beauty and the Beast

Hi. Well been a very busy week all round. On top of my university work I decided to take on the task of animating over two minutes of animation in a week and a half. . .

No small task I'm sure you'll agree. The animations where commissioned by the Acting department in the arts university, for the third year graduation production of 'Beauty and the Beast.'

After having seen the last two productions. 'The house of Bernada Alba' and 'Love on the Dole'. I quickly realised the quality of the acting was beyond any measure, and that the animations had to live up to that standard. And so with the help of Carmen Bromfield Mason. Tom Tanner. Michael James Field and Frayah Louise Humphries. We set about creating the various different shots.

These screen grabs hopefully give you an idea of the style and mood we went for. It was all hand drawn and hand painted. I was chuffed to bits with the outcomes of the shots and I cant thank my team enough for helping.

I have yet to see the play. Tomorrow night is the night. And I personally cannot wait. If your interested in seeing the shots or hearing about the play I hope to upload them soon in a new post.

In the mean time, I am thankful to find myself getting back into the swing of having spare time.

Recent Life Drawings

Hiya, long time no post! I have been very busy recently at uni and have unfortunately neglected my Blog a bit. But this stops now. And so to start off this post I would like to share some recent life drawings.

We recently had a task where we had to assess each others work according to where we think they fit in the grading matrix used by our university. It is the hardest thing however, to try and apply these techniques to your own drawings. I look at them and I see every minute spent on them. Every gesture invested into them. Because I drew it. I think, in the end, I'll just have to wait and see how the marks come out.

In the mean time i would also like to congratulate a friend and animator on my course, Francis Kelleher. He has completed a gargantuan task that i fear i could never have the willpower to achieve my self. Every evening he has gone home and drawn a self portrait. 365 days worth to be exact.

Captain James T Quack

Hiya. Well it sure has been a busy couple of weeks. I have now officially moved back into Bournemouth, into a new student house. I am living with three other animators this year. However, far from being a stimulating work driven environment. I think I may instead get distracted rather a lot by the likes of Lego star wars and Movie nights! (Cant wait!)

In the mean time on the week of my move in, a rather intriguing Imagine Fx challenge appeared that caught my eye, and my imagination. The title 'Captain James T Quack'. The brief, to design an animated character who is a duck, and who is also a caricature of James T Kirk from the original Star Trek series.

I did have a quick go at sketching out an idea for this challenge and managed to at least paint the characters into photoshop. But due to the hefty restraints on my time that particular week I was unable to place them in a setting.

Sad times.

In the end then I didn't enter the challenge. But here I can post unashamedly. This is as far as I got.

The idea being that the duck isn't actually Captain James T Quack. But rather a young duck who idolises him instead.

I may work back into the picture at a later date. I would like to add a Winnie the Pooh esque illustration to the background. But that can wait. Time to get back into the swing of animating!

Approaches to Character Design

I have recently been focussing an awful lot of my attention towards doing a bit of character design for the film I will be working on over the next year. (As exampled in the previous post). It is quite a new experiance for me. I have always done silly doodles of people and characters (usually in the back of GCSE maths books). And I have come up with a few intriguing character concepts in my time.

But never have I had to take the design process seriously. I have found it quite a brain strain to be constantly thinking of new ways to portray a character. New ways to visualise a character. Etc.

I think I have found a process however, that I can really get my teeth into. I made an airy presumption that perhaps if I new the character well enough inside myself. Almost as the actor knows his role for example. Then maybe the design will begin to reveal itself to me as well. To test this i decided to draw the character I know better than any other. Myself.

The design process was straight away a more fluid act. Ideas and lines literally spilled onto the paper. I found it easy to put out ideas for a character on the page. Not just in aesthetics, but in attitude as well.

So a little trick. If your stuck for visual ideas for a character. Sit down for half an hour and write about who your character is instead. Learn them from the inside out first.

Character Concepts

I will be moving into my second year of Animation production this coming September and as such will be working regularly on a graduate film that has been written and directed by two third years, Hollie Taylor, and Nat Young. I was lucky enough to get onto a film that i feel i can really get my teeth stuck in to. As such i have been working on concepts and ideas for the film over the last month. Without giving anything away I would like to share a concept I have been working on over the last day or so. The majority of the design is by me. However Hollie and Nat, my directors, deserve credit as well for influencing the style and the feel of the characters I have drawn.

Winchester Musings

Yesterday was a day well spent, sketching in Winchester. Once the capital of great Britain, now instead a very charming touristy kind of town. Complete with decorative Tudor shop fronts, and impressive statues of past kings tucked away in small corners of the main marketing streets.

One sketch in particular I would like to share, was drawn inside Winchester cathedral (much to the amusement of passers by) and took about half an hour.

It was an odd experience for me. Having been on an animation course now for a year my style of drawing, particularly in the sketches, has changed a great deal. I used to be very Tonal. Block in the values first with rough shapes rather than work at details. Very much in the same way that a painter approaches a blank canvas.

However I now have become rather fussy, and obsessed with getting good line quality in my work too, as well as depth. This Winchester sketch I would say is a particularly prominent example as it is the first time I have used this technique in architectural drawing. (Before hand I worked very loosely and quickly, trying to capture essence rather than realism). As this sketch, done last year from Beaulieu In the New forest, shows.

It still manages to impress me even now how within this way of working depth in a picture doesn't have to be tonal at all. Just the thickness of a line and the hardness of a line tells you where it is in space.

I am not sure what style I prefer however, and I think at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. If you leant something new and you enjoy it, does it matter whether it is rough and ready or fine and detailed.

I enjoyed this, and I learnt a lot not only about the space inside the cathedral, but about drawing too. So all is good with the world once more

Hiya, so here's my show-reel at long last. It took long enough. I suppose long summer days and living by the sea is mainly to blame. Alas it is time I started to stretch myself again and once more begin arting. It struck me how much I have actually neglected drawing over the last month or so when i paid an impromptu visit to my sketchbook. It is astonishing how a month of inconsideration to the aforementioned object could make such a difference. So it seems I shall need to whip myself back into shape (hopefully) in the next couple of weeks. Ready for the new term.

Mutant Gorilla!

Ahhh, bliss. The summer has come again. And finally I find myself with enough time to both draw, and go to the beach! In the mean time however I have been entering one or two of the Imagine FX challenges. Heres one of my more recent entries. The title was mutant, so naturally i knocked up a swamp gorilla. Im very pleased with it, though i dont think it is as refined as some of my previous works. That is due in most though to the fact that i had to finish it in one day. Here it is anyhow.

The War Machine

Hi, so yer pitch week has happened! Was really exciting, and thankfully managed to get on a really cool film as well. Woop! In the mean time however (as votes where being counted and such) i did this picture for one of the Imagine FX challeges. The title was 'War Machine' . . . as you can see I took the title literally ;-) But yer im really proud of this image. It was fun to make due to the mixed media nature of it, and its a different kind of result to what i usually achieve.

The wips are just here, theres a bit more clarity in them this time in regard to my working process.

Hi, this image is (hopefully) the final image for my design for layout unit. The brief was to create an artists studio. This is a rather ambiguous picture then you may think. (And you would be right to think so) But ambiguity aside im quite proud of it. Hope you like it too.

Underneath here is the process i went through to get to the final stage. The WIP's are very similair though so unfortunately you cant actually see much of my thought process. ah well.
